Petroglyphs & Pictographs

Throughout the Colorado River corridor, Petroglyphs and Pictographs are scattered across canyon walls, offering a window into the past. These rock art sites, such as those at Newspaper Rock and near Hog Springs, typically depict animals, human figures, and abstract symbols, reflecting the spiritual beliefs, daily activities, and cultural practices of the indigenous peoples.

These ancient markings vary in style and technique—some are intricate carvings (petroglyphs), while others are painted images (pictographs)—and can be found in remote locations, often in stunning natural settings. The diversity in imagery reveals the richness of the culture that once thrived along the Colorado River and serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between the land and its earliest inhabitants.
